Sacramento is centrally located in Northern California, nestled in a fertile valley between San Francisco and Lake Tahoe. Named "America's Farm-to-Fork Capital", Sacramento is the capital city to the largest producing state of agriculture in the nation and, locally, 70 percent of the region’s land is agricultural, forest or other open space. Local restaurants utilize the abundance of regionally grown products to create a Farm-to-Fork freshness that’s unparalleled in this country. While many local farms ship their products across the country - a process that can take days — regional restaurants can pick up fresh product in the morning and serve it to patrons for lunch and dinner. Additionally, the region contains 7,000 to 8,000 acres of boutique farms and provides numerous public sales platforms at more than 50 regional farmers markets, many of which are year-round fixtures.
The city's history began in 1839 when Johann Agustus Sutter settled at the confluence of the American and Sacramento rivers. The discovery of gold near Sacramento in 1848 started California's famous Gold Rush, bringing thousands of fortune seekers to the area almost overnight. The city has been on the move ever since and is now one of the fastest growing regions in the United States.
Sacramento has an abundance of year-round attractions, museums, and entertainment venues tucked into its culturally diverse cityscape. Enjoy our local playhouses and the Broadway stage, museums and galleries, poetry readings and film festivals, ballet and opera. Recreation tops the list for outdoor activities with hundreds of miles of waterways, 2,000 acres of city parks, more than 50 golf courses, and two nearby lakes.
"The City of Sacramento could not be more proud to host Stage 1 of the Amgen Tour of California and to kick off race festivities for such a distinguished group of athletes," said Kevin Johnson, mayor of Sacramento. "There is no better way to start the race's route through California’s iconic landmarks, attractions and scenery than in the state’s capital city."
-Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson
"Sacramento County is proud to welcome the Tour of California back to our capital region. We know that the riders and spectators will enjoy the views as their route takes them through some of the most beautiful areas of the County."
-Supervisor Phil Serna, Chair, Sacramento County Board of Supervisors
